Want to see a free show in Paris? Then try BilletGratuit.com, a website that offers free tickets to artistic shows and performances (“billet gratuit” means “free ticket” in English). Simply sign up on the website to receive two free theater tickets per week. Tickets are distributed on a “first come, first served” basis. The majority of the free tickets are for plays and theater performances.
BilletGratuit.com was launched in April 2014, when IT developer Julian Waterlot and a friend noticed that many of the exceptional theater performances they attended often had several unfilled seats. Upon further researcher and discussion with theater professionals, they learned that 51% of the French population above the age of 14 hasn’t seen a show in the last 12 months. Furthermore, only 5% of the French population regularly attends live shows.*
How Billet Gratuit Works
From this discovery a new concept was born: BilletGratuit.com. Since its creation, BilletGratuit.com has partnered with a variety of professionals in the entertainment and event organization sector to offer free theater tickets to the general public. To participate, partner organizations fix a quota of free invitations for their events. Once all of the free tickets have been distributed, spectators can buy event tickets at a reduced price. Partner organizations benefit from increased visibility for their shows. At the same time, the spectators who get the free or reduced-price tickets are able to discover new talent. They can thus help draw attention to the shows through word of mouth.
